Who
QUASI PENGUIN
Quasi Penguin is an independent software development and digital media studio based in Calgary, Alberta. It is a registered software business operating under the Pattern Beneath umbrella. It is driven by one person with a biology degree, a decade of teaching experience across Southeast Asia, five years of practical mycology, and a deep conviction that software should work for the person using it rather than for the business distributing it.
The games, tools, and content produced under the Quasi Penguin name are not separate projects with a shared logo. They are part of a single connected world, built from the same underlying philosophy. You should own what you pay for, the code should do what it says, and your data is none of our business.
What Kind of Software
THE APPROACH
Every Quasi Penguin product is built toward the same set of principles, regardless of whether it is a card game, a raycaster, an open world, or a VTuber rig.
Offline first. If it can run without a server, it does. From Progressive Web Apps to local storage and LAN play, the goal is always that the software continues to work without an internet connection, and whether or not Quasi Penguin still exists as a company. The game lives on your device, not on our servers.
No dark patterns. DLC is optional and, once purchased, permanent. Paid features are not features the free version silently had removed. Hosting fees are for hosting, not for software. Open source code is genuinely open. The code does the thing. That is it.
Physical things matter. Software can also be something you hold. Physical card decks, instruction booklets that are part of the game, and dedicated single-game handheld devices are all part of the Quasi Penguin release model. If the servers disappeared tomorrow, you would still have something real.
Games that teach real skills. Our games utilize deliberate friction and unique control schemes to build focused attention. We also weave customization directly into the gameplay, making modification part of the practice. The MMORPG chat system is built around family-safe communication architecture informed by a decade of teaching experience with young multilingual learners. These are not incidental features. They reflect what the games were built to do.
The Bigger Picture
ONE WORLD
The Quasi Penguin game catalogue is a connected universe. This is not corporate franchise planning. It emerged organically from how the games were designed. Each title solves a problem or explores an idea that the next one builds upon. The result is that every game you play is a door into something larger, and the skills you develop in one carry into the next.
Content & Research
BEYOND THE GAMES
Quasi Penguin is also a content platform. The YouTube channel (@quasipenguin) covers game development, AI tools, digital media, and field biology. The Ethical AI Chronicles blog addresses AI ethics, the philosophy of personhood and obligation, and the question of what it means to build systems that are genuinely trustworthy. Deep Time Biology teaching resources explore ecology, mycology, and the long arc of biological systems on a geological timescale.
These are not separate interests wearing the same hat. Field biology informs the game worlds. AI ethics informs the software architecture. Teaching experience informs the chat systems and the learning design. The work is integrated because the person doing it is integrated.
The Umbrella
PATTERN BENEATH
Quasi Penguin operates under the Pattern Beneath umbrella. Pattern Beneath is our research arm concerned with biosymbiotic robotics, AI ethics, and the long-term question of how intelligent systems can be built to remain genuinely trustworthy. The active project is a biosymbiotic hexapod robot designed as a physical field assistant. The robotics work draws on ecological integration, exploring how biological systems and software architecture can merge.
🤖 Pattern Beneath
The games made under Quasi Penguin are part of this project. Building a game engine is building a spatial reasoning system. Building a safe chat architecture for an MMORPG is building communication safety infrastructure. Building a neuroplasticity tool in a raycaster is exploring how deliberate friction changes behaviour. Each game is a way of developing and testing the components that a safe, embodied, ecologically grounded robotic system will eventually need.
Pattern Beneath content lives at Ethical AI Chronicles and across the Quasi Penguin YouTube channel. The Patreon (PatternBeneath) supports both streams of work.
